Washing and Shrouding for Muslims
A Practical Guide by Alfirdaus Jinnazah Services
Caring for a loved one who has passed is a sacred responsibility. At Alfirdaus Jinnazah Services, we help families understand and follow proper Islamic procedures for washing and shrouding the deceased, while making the process simple and respectful.
Once your loved one is brought to our facility, you have the option to participate in the washing and shrouding process under the guidance of our professional team. Our staff has over 10 years of experience helping and guiding families with care, respect, and full adherence to Islamic practices.
Below is a practical, step-by-step guide to help you understand how the process works:
-
Place the body on a stable surface or table.
Use a head support to keep the head steady.
Ensure the private area (“A’WRAA”) is always covered.
Use lukewarm water, cooler than hot is better.
Have all supplies ready: gloves, soap, clean towels, shrouds (kafan).
-
Remove any bandages or tubes, unless it may cause leakage.
Gently clean the private parts, keeping them covered at all times.
Use a gloved hand wrapped in a cloth for contact.
Clean the stomach area gently if needed.
Dispose of soiled towels discreetly.
Maintain privacy and respect; do not share details of the process.
-
Perform wudu on the deceased, just like regular ablution.
Ensure proper intention and care throughout.
-
Use mild soapy water.
Start with the head and hair, shampoo can be used.
Wash the front right side from shoulder to feet, cleaning under armpits, folds of skin, chest, and knees.
Gently turn the body to the left side and clean the back while keeping private areas covered.
Repeat for the left side.
-
Use plain water without soap.
Pour water starting from the head, then right front, right back, left front, and left back.
Ensure the whole body is rinsed thoroughly.
-
Prepare a mixture of camphor, natural leaves, or other alcohol-free scents.
Pour the mixture gently over the body from head to feet.
No rubbing or washcloth is needed, simply let the scent flow over the body.
-
Use white sheets of proper size (around 6 ft x 7 ft).
Males: 3 sheets;
Females: 5 sheets (additional pieces for scarves or chest covers if desired).Wrap the body carefully with each sheet.
Secure with three ties: above the head, around the middle, and below the feet.
An extra sheet may be used to carry the body to the casket or transport.
-
Kafan (shrouds) for men and women
Lukewarm water and Zamzam water for ghusl
Soap, shampoo, and cleansing supplies
Natural scents like camphor, leaves, and other alcohol-free fragrances
Gloves, towels, and all protective equipment
Everything is handled with the utmost respect and care, so families can focus on honoring their loved ones.
